I used to do side jobs quite often. If you have a computer or network issue, I can probably help you out. I also volunteer my time helping organizations with their IT needs. But I’m also a very busy man. I had once tried to make a side business out of side jobs, but I happen to work for an airline with a bunch of nerds, none of whom need help with their personal tech, or if they do I just talk to them and help them figure it out.
Maybe you have a computer problem and I can help you. Maybe I can do a side job for you. I used to charge an hourly rate. If I can solve your problem in 5-10 minutes standing in the driveway, don’t worry about it. It’s not a problem. If it’s a 30min-2 hour problem that I need to work on at my desk, or you want me to build a secure website, I expect a “tip”. Tip me appropriately, slip me a $20 or a couple if it’s a big job. If I’m spending hours or weeks on a website, we’ll probably have a conversation about billing. Also, it’s always been my policy to heavily discount first responders and 501(c) organizations. Even before my brother was a cop. If you’re a cop or firefighter, I’m happy to help you out with your tech problems and you can “tip” less than civilians. No offense to anyone, I just have a soft spot in my heart for people who run towards danger.
